As some of you may already know, Christmas Markets are a BIG deal all around Germany. Most Christmas Markets start in the last week of November and run through to Christmas Eve or a day or two before. Here you can buy all kinds of Christmas merchandise and gifts, especially traditional things such as crib figurines, toys, wood carvings, nutcrackers, candles, etc. As you walk through, the smell of Gluwhein (mulled wine), candied nuts, fresh breads, bratwursts, and many more delightful aromas fill the air. L Dubs enjoyed carrying around a hot glass of Gluhwein to keep him "toasty" and warm! I enjoyed trying all of the traditional German Market food. My absolute favorite was a Huhnchen mit Curry. There is a picture below to prove how wonderful it was. It was fresh dough, cooked in a brick oven, filled with chicken, curry, and tons of cheese. They topped it with a dollop of sour cream and chives. OMG...I am still dreaming about it. L Dubs enjoyed the Kartoffelpuffer which is a German potato pancake. . .A-M-A-Z-I-N-G!! They are traditionally served with a side of apple sauce. L Dubs and I opted out, and indulged with some tzatziki sauce instead, while L Rizzy enjoyed the homemade applesauce. One booth that we missed out on was the Finnish Salmon sandwiches cooked over an open fire. There was always an enormous line so with a 9 month old in tow, potential hypothermia always scared us off. Maybe next year?!?
L Dubs and I are very disappointed that the Leipzig Market wraps up tonight. We now have no motivation to bundle L Rizzy up and go for a long walk in this frigid weather. It has been a particularly warm winter in Germany, so they say, but it is pretty hard to convince us of that as we were spoiled in Los Angeles the past two years.
